Putting well-being first, the Hack The Box way

Since 2017, we’ve embarked on a mission to redefine performance in the cybersecurity industry. Central to this mission is our belief that to make an impact on our customers and community, we must first nurture the heart of Hack The Box, our people. By prioritizing their well-being, we aim to create an environment where each HTBer can thrive, bringing out the best version of themselves, day in and day out.

Support is core to our culture’s DNA

We believe that empowering our team to voice their ideas, share feedback, celebrate successes, and seek support is crucial to our success. We achieve this through various channels, including all-hands meetings, fireside chats with our executive team, performance reviews, peer feedback, development conversations, satisfaction surveys, and more. These platforms ensure that every HTBer feels heard, valued, and supported across all departments and levels.

Our commitment to fostering a supportive environment is reflected in the results of our latest Engagement Survey, where employees rated “My manager genuinely cares about my well-being” at 9.06 out of 10 and “Hack The Box cares about my well-being” at 8.65 out of 10.

Connection with mental health professionals

Talking about support, we collaborate with an online mental health platform that provides ongoing therapeutic assistance and connects HTBers with certified mental health professionals.

Comprehensive PTO and parental leave policies

We believe in the power of rest and the importance of time away from work to ensure both productivity and well-being. That’s why we offer a robust paid time off (PTO) policy, giving every team member 25 days of PTO annually – far surpassing the minimum requirements in most regions. This policy applies to everyone, regardless of tenure.

In addition to our PTO policy, we support our HTBers during one of life’s most significant milestones: becoming a parent. In the US, we provide 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, and across all our locations, we offer 4 weeks of paid paternity leave.

“The paternity leave policy at HTB is very generous. The 4 weeks I provided ensured that I was there for my wife in the last days of her pregnancy, and fully present for my son’s birth and the weeks that followed without having to worry about work duties. This gave me peace of mind and allowed me to soak in these precious first moments and the weeks that followed with my wife, newborn, and my other children.”

Ben Rollin, Head of Information Security at Hack The Box

4-day workweeks

Because we are huge fans of summer, for the past three summers, we’ve implemented a four-day workweek during July and August for all HTBers without any impact on their monthly compensation.

Moving beyond the traditional 9-to-5 with increased flexibility and autonomy

We recognize that the traditional 9-to-5 workday doesn’t work for everyone. That’s why we value a hybrid work model that provides all HTBers with the flexibility to combine working from home and in our offices in a way that works best for them. This approach balances the benefits of remote work with the collaborative advantages of being onsite, enabling HTBers to tailor their schedules to fit their personal productivity patterns while staying connected with their teams.

We trust our team to manage their tasks in the way that suits them best. As a result, our managers avoid micromanagement and daily reporting requirements, focusing instead on being available to support their teams. This fosters a work environment built on trust and autonomy. Our commitment to flexibility and autonomy is reflected in the results of our latest Engagement Survey, where employees rated manager support 9 out of 10 in these areas.

Prioritizing well-being in cybersecurity

Our commitment to well-being extends beyond our team to the wider cybersecurity community. We believe that a focus on people’s well-being is key to strengthening an organization’s security posture. Through our product suite, we offer solutions designed to prevent employee burnout and boost talent retention. By equipping employees with the necessary skills, tools, time, and clear expectations, we help organizations create sustainable career development paths.

We also support our community and customers by providing resources related to the toll of burnout on cybersecurity professionals and businesses. In our latest report, we found that 65% of cybersecurity and infosecurity professionals have experienced stress, fatigue, or burnout due to skill gaps and pressure to perform beyond their capabilities. This burnout is costing US enterprises over $626 million annually and UK enterprises over £130 million annually. To address this, we share strategies that security and business leaders worldwide can adopt to enhance team performance and optimize workforce development.

At Hack The Box, we understand that a thriving workforce is the foundation of a successful company – and we’re committed to ensuring that our HTBers and the wider cybersecurity community are equipped to excel in every way.
